What is Keto?

Keto is short for the ketogenic diet, a low-carb, high fat diet. Similar to the Atkins diet, keto is about eating less carbs and sugar and more fats and protein.

The keto diet tries to motivate the body to go into ketosis, or a state where the body is burning fat to get energy. This diet is not for everyone, and you should consult your doctor before considering a keto diet. 

Keto dieters reduce or avoid eating sugary foods like sodas and ice cream, grains and starches like rice and pasta, fruit, and beans.

Instead, they focus on filling up on meats like steak and bacon, fatty fish like salmon and tuna, butter and heavy cream, nuts like almonds and walnuts, and unprocessed cheese like cheddar and goat.

Tips on Ordering Keto-Friendly Drinks

Sweeten with sugar-free vanilla syrup
Replace regular syrup with sugar-free vanilla syrup (the only sugar-free syrup at Starbucks), but don’t go crazy with it since it contains maltodextrin, which isn’t super keto-friendly since it’s a highly processed sweetener.

Replace milk with heavy cream or almondmilk
Heavy cream has the least amount of carbs out of all the dairy milk options so it’s the most keto-friendly. Of all the plant-based milks at Starbucks, almond milk has the fewest carbs (5 grams per 8 ounce serving).

Ask if drinks are unsweetened
A lot of drinks are made with sugary syrups even if you don’t want it sweetened. A lot of the cold drinks at Starbucks come pre-sweetened, or will be sweetened if not specifically stated. 

Skip the whipped cream
Unfortunately, whipped cream is full of sugar and carbs.

Skinny drinks aren’t all keto-friendly
Skinny drinks are made with nonfat milk, which has a whopping 12g of carbs in each cup! This is a lot considering most keto dieters try to stay under 50g of carbs a day.

Avoid Frappuccinos
All Starbucks Frappuccinos are made using a Frappuccino base syrup which is made with sugar. There’s no way to get a sugar-free Frappuccino.

Avoid Refreshers
Refreshers are made from pre-sweetened bases, so it can’t be modified.

Watch out for pre-sweetened ingredients
Matcha is pre-sweetened so you can’t get it unsweetened. The chai lattes are made with a pre-sweetened chai concentrate.

Order customized keto drinks by listing the ingredients
Starbucks baristas aren’t trained to make drinks keto, so be prepared to order the drink with the exact ingredients and how it should be made. Instead of asking for a Keto Flat White, order it by saying: “Can I get a grande unsweetened Flat White with half heavy cream and half water instead of the milk?”

Since these drinks aren’t on the Starbucks official menu, you can’t order them by name. Be prepared to say everything that should be in the drink since saying “I want a keto vanilla latte” won’t work.

Unsweetened Iced Coffee

The Starbucks Iced Coffee comes sweetened, so to make it keto, take out the sugary syrup. You can replace it with sugar-free vanilla syrup to make it more keto-friendly if you want it sweetened. Unsweetened Iced Coffee has zero carbs.

Keto Pink Drink
Base drink: Iced Passion Tango Tea instead of the Pink Drink
Customizations: Replace liquid cane sugar with 2 pumps of sugar-free vanilla syrup, add light heavy cream instead of coconutmilk, and 2 scoops of strawberry inclusions (freeze-dried strawberries)

Note that there is still a little sugar in almondmilk. Replacing the 2% milk with heavy cream is super high in calories (over 1600 calories in a grande!) so watch out for those hidden traps.

Questions You May Have

Are Frappuccinos keto? 

No, and there’s no way to modify Frappuccinos to make them keto-friendly since they’re made with a pre-made Frappuccino base syrup that’s loaded with sugar. There isn’t a sugar-free Frappuccino base syrup. An option is to request iced drinks to be blended, but the drink will separate easily and won’t have that Frappuccino texture.

Is matcha keto-friendly? 

No. The Starbucks matcha powder is pre-made with sugar, so it’s not keto and can’t be made keto.

What’s the lowest carb drink at Starbucks? 

Anything simple like brewed coffee, cold brew, and unsweetened tea all have zero carbs.

  1. Hello. I drink Starbucks and make it keto due to diabetes. Sugar free vanilla is not the only sugar free option. There is also sugar free cinnamon dulce!
